Happy Halloween, folks! The sweet month of October has come to an end and as always it does with a spooky bang. Halloween is a night of festivities, candies and a ton of fun. However, as always it is always better to be safe than sorry.
Depending on whether you are accompanying your kids while they trick-or-treat or you’re the ones hosting and giving out candy, here are some ways you can stay safe on this ghostly night:
Trick or Treating
1. Visit Homes with the Lights On
It is always better to visit homes that have their lights on. Typically, having the lights on means the owner is welcoming tick-or-treaters and will give out candy happily. Another reason for this is the fact that having lights on allows you to do a quick surveillance of its surrounding and ensure it is indeed safe to proceed to the house.
2. Never Go Inside
Please ensure that the kids know they should not go inside the homes or the cars of strangers. It is also helpful for the kids to be able to recognize block parents’ homes on the streets in case of emergency.
3. Inspect Candy
Always make sure that the children know they are not supposed to eat candy before they are inspected by an adult. You can never be too sure what they are given.
4. Have a Reflective Tape On
Since Halloween trick-or-treating starts after it is dark, it is imperative that the children wear reflective tapes on their costumes so they can be visualized by cars and individuals from afar.
5. Avoid Wearing Face Masks
Use face paint to paint the kids’ faces instead of wearing masks as they hinder their eye sight and make it hard to see.
6. Practice Safety Methods When Crossing
Ensure that your children know the safe practices of crossing streets and roads by looking on both sides of the streets before crossing and using the crosswalks whenever possible.
Staying At Home
1. Have Your Smart Home App Ready
Since you will be receiving a lot of visitors at your door, it is important to make sure that you have your smart phone charged and your smart home app ready to access.
2. Ensure All Lights Are On
If you are planning on welcoming trick-or-treaters it is important to have your lights on to let them know. Also, it acts as a safety measure since it helps deter intruders from trying to access the house by making it super easy for them to be identified in bright light.
3. Be Alert
Always be alert and ensure you have your eyes on everything. Having a smart home system in place can help you out tremendously in such an event. Therefore, make sure you are constantly checking your smart home app to ensure that everything in and outside the house seems normal.
4. Ensure Garage, Doors and Windows are Locked
Make sure you doors and windows, as well as, garage doors are shut and locked to keep yourself safe from intruders. With a smart home app it is extremely easy to ensure that everything is locked and your home is secured.
5. Use Your Video Door Bell for Preliminary Checks
Instead of opening your door to whoever knocks, it is always smart to make preliminary checks to make sure that the visitor is in fact an innocent trick-or-treater instead of an intruder trying to take advantage of the occasion. With a video doorbell you can do so easily by surveying the surroundings of your door, as well as, interacting with the visitor before you open the door. In fact, imagine how fun it would be if the tiny, cute monsters heard the door talk to them?!
